  5. 1885 raised the age of consent from 13 to 16,
  6. and that of abduction from 16 to 18, after a
  7. campaign by William Thomas Stead (1849-1912),
  8. editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, exposed the
  9. white slave trade from England to Paris and
  10. Brussels. Stead's purchase of a girl to
  11. demonstrate the existence of the trade led to
  12. his prosecution, conviction, and imprisonment
  13. for three months. In the USA it varies
  14. according to state statutes.
